Cable Size and Cable Strands

What does the size of wire have to do with 12 Volt Lighting?
Ohms law will show that higher amperage is found in Low Voltage runs. N.E.C. Article 411 limits runs to 25 amps or 300 watts in a single 12 Volt system (VA=W...12V X 25A = 300W).
A 50 foot run of 300 W using #12 wire has a Volt Drop of 2.0V, even with # 10 the Drop is 1.25. Voltage drop is caused by the resistance in the wire to the flow of electricity. This is why we list and stock wire as large as # 8.
Some Contractors have had excess Voltage drop because they were using non UL stranded electrical wire. Depending on size, 19 or 21 strands. This wire is stiffer and normally cheaper.
Voltage drop is dramatically increased when accidentally "skinning" the copper wire by cutting off copper strands.  Losing just one strand will result in a loss of 14% of the rated amperage. This loss amounts to 34 Watts of current carrying capacity. End result, you are trying to push 20 Amps through wire that can only carry 17 Amps.
Every once in a while it is a good idea to check your cable supplier for accuracy. This is the requirements for N.E.C. cable specs.

Please Sit For A Cup Of Tee

Happy New Year everybody.  Most of you already know, there were major changes at NightscapingŪ last year, namely when our beloved founder and president Bill Locklin passed away.  Mr. Locklin had made the necessary legal arrangements for NightscapingŪ to continue in its current entity.  Mergers or acquisitions by others is not in our future.  The same management team that was running the company when Bill was ill will continue to guide the company.  It is our intention to continue with Bill's legacy, building on it and helping it grow as a company where friends continue doing business with friends.

We see a very positive direction in our business future and look forward to many new opportunities in 2008.  You will see NightscapingŪ roll out exciting new items embracing the available technologies that we have tested and backed with our incomparable warranty.  And you will immediately notice Bill's obvious touch and influence in each and every item.  See the effect, not the source.  We intend to continue to operate NightscapingŪ in the true spirit of Bill.  This is our commitment to you.  We look forward to servicing and helping all of you toward a successful and prosperous 2008.  Our goals for 2008 are no different from prior years, to provide superior service, inventive new products and tools to profitably solve your lighting challenges.  I'm very confident that we will be successful.

Please be assured that NightscapingŪ remains committed to providing you, our loyal customers, the products and services that you have come to expect from us.

Sincerely,

Seng-Tee Tan,
Vice President
