The Outdoor Living Room
By Max Lim
I REGARD mythical Ireland as my home for the past 18 years, but every once upon a dismal day, my reverie yearns for the tropical sun in azure skies and swaying coconut trees along golden shores, a place where I come from, a land called Malaysia.
If you aren't from the region, chances are, you'd be hard pressed to find Malaysia on the map. So let me tell you a little story about Malaysia, and how her beauty has reached out to me, a thousand miles away, and into a garden idea called Neo Nusantara.
Oh, Malaysia, Land of Glory
Malaysia means many things to many people, from its bustling capital of Kuala Lumpur, the lush virgin rainforests, to the rich and colorful diversity of its different cultures and races. But the one memory I hold dear about the land of my birth is about how readily accessible all the beauty and pleasure of nature is to me.
Perhaps it was in my childhood. Nature was a constant companion. This was an age before digital and cable. I attended school but my real education was in the outdoors, among caterpillars and butterflies, in the woods and meandering stream. My daily rhythm began to synchronize to the natural rhythm of sunny days and sudden downpours.
I lived in town but the jungle was a mere bicycle ride away. My home wasn't really that, so I spent as much time outdoors as I could in the jungle, a hideaway of sorts for me, a place that made a profound difference in how I eventually viewed life.
I remember having meals sitting on the branch of a tree old enough to be my grandfather, the branches above filtering the sunlight, the sounds of a thousand insects serenading me in my solitude. But how could I possible feel lonely! All my senses were alive!
Sometimes I brought my friends to the stream. I remember how cool the dark green waters were when I jumped in, and scrambled out, the sun above warming me immediately. I'd lie on the banks staring dreamily at the blue sky and clouds forming images in my mind.
It all seems so distant now, but when I hear the sounds of crickets or frogs, they're like a time machine transporting me to another world.
Neo Nusantara, the Garden of Malaysia
This is what Malaysia meant to me, where the outdoors was just one big room where I could play, eat, sleep, and well, whatever else people did indoors.
The leaf covered ground became the carpet, the plants and trees the walls, and the starry sky above the ceiling. This was the most wonderful room in the world that no castle or palace could ever replicate.
And it was this idea of the outdoor living room around which a team of designers in Malaysia built a concept garden. Their idea at the core is a simple one. Design a garden that can be "lived in", stimulating all your five senses as only nature can.
That is where Neo Nusantara gardens depart from any other garden concept in the world. It isn't only about beauty and grandeur, the aim is to harness pleasure from Mother Nature.
When you step into the Neo Nusantara garden, you can see the contrast between wood and green, stone and water, the elements of stability and serenity. This is literally a sight for sore eyes.
But don't just look from a distance. The garden, like an old friend, is inviting and welcoming. There is no "Keep off the grass" sign. It is designed to be truly appreciated from the inside. The texture of wood, the coolness of the water feature, the garden entices you to be intimate with nature.
And as you see and feel, and still the myriad thoughts in your mind, you begin to hear sounds you never noticed. The bubbling of the fountain, the whisper of the breeze, the rustling of leaves, the birds, insects - voices not speaking to your mind, but to your heart.
And then the perfume of the earth wafts over, from spice plants and fragrant shrubs. Imagine savouring your favourite drink or having a picnic in such magical surroundings.
This is the part of Malaysia I plan to introduce to my home now in Ireland. The weather here can be unforgiving, the culture different, but I believe the beauty and pleasure of nature is universal. Welcome to the Outdoor Living Room.
