Something To Live By

It is better to know some of the questions, than all of the answers.

Lighting Specialist of the Week, Leivas Lighting

Leivas Lighting provides it's clients with all of the outdoor lighting products and services necessary to achieve a beautiful, long lasting and well designed lighting system.

Fixtures are displayed in a unique outdoor lighting showroom that displays over 300 different fixtures AND the effect that they will have on your landscape. We believe that our customers should be able to handle the actual product they are purchasing, not just view an image from a catalog. This is important to confirm that our customers are getting the quality and effect they are looking for.

The design of a lighting system should be completed with both form and function in mind. The proper type and placement of fixtures must be determined along with lens and lamp types to achieve the desired lighting effect. After this, the proper wiring design must be considered. Proper voltage MUST be provided to ALL of the fixtures at all times. Failure to do so will result in dim or short-lived lamps (or both!). This would ruin the effect of any lighting system.

Installation must be completed with experience and professionalism to assure the integrity of the lighting system. Proper installation of the fixtures, wiring and transformer will insure trouble free operation. All connections are made with waterproof connectors to prevent corrosion. This is the number one cause of system failure. We repair systems every day that have failed because they do not have these connectors.

Leivas Lighting puts it all together like no other company. Add beauty, safety, security and increase the value of your home by having us put together a custom outdoor lighting package for you.

A Night Romance With Nature

The psychology of light, the engineering science, and natures presentation of light all are lessons in "the night romance with nature".  As one of our five senses; to hear, to smell, to feel, to taste, and to see; to see is a value that nature controls day and night.  Landscape Architectural Lighting is qualitative in function and aesthetic.  Designed lighting either controls or supplements nature's light.  Wisdom in dealing with space for people suggests supplementing natural light is more aesthetic and more likely the choice of comfort.  "A properly presented evening landscape is like a romance with nature".

To present the concept of making darkness more comfortable, the presentation of light needs to secure the space.  This space should be safe and pleasing to visit or pass through.  As in any design process there is need to identify the space vocabulary.  Through site inventory, analysis, and synthesis a design program results.  To use Nightscaping - is to have a romance with nature.

Lighting Tips

Sometimes we learn the most from short quick tips on how to improve our knowledge base.  Hopefully the following list will spark a few fires that needed to be stoked.

  • Overlap downlights and/or pathlights to prevent hot spots
  • The human eye is always attracted to the brightest light source
  • Any light above what you need is glare
  • Light produces shadows
  • Triangulate focal points both horizontally and vertically
  • Light travels in straight lines, the only way to bend it is with reflectors
  • Light is either reflected or absorbed
  • If you want a room to feel larger, paint the walls a light color.  This can be applied in outdoor living spaces with light
  • Design with shadows, not with light
  • Shadows create moods
