Specializing Fixtures

There are over 50 different lighting companies around the US, not to mention the hundreds of knock-off companies across the seas.  Like any other business, we all need to distinguish ourselves from the competition. How many of our lighting competitors actually manufacture their own "fixture"? How many manufacturers actually have a factory and not just an importing business? Heck, how many can even keep a supply of parts, much less make a special order? At  our NightscapingŪ factory in Redlands CA, we manufacture products not only to our supreme level of expectation, but to your installation and design needs.

That alone allows us to separate ourselves from the competition. We can appreciate the need to manufacture to your specification. The factory has done many unusual things for contractors and specifiers. Imagine a fixture you use on a regular basis. Now customize it. Make it your own. For example, an Earthtone O'keefeliter mounted on a Tree Bracket with a louver and an LO2006 lamp.  It is your fixture. It is made to your specification. We have done this across the country for countless contractors and countless specifiers. This can be said for any fixture in our catalog.

At the factory, we don't just design and build new fixtures, we create fixtures for a new effect, a new mood. There are many fixtures in the catalog that were created out of the need for a special effect. The La Paloma is a fixture created for the La Paloma Country Club. A stylish fixture with a long lasting bulb spec, solid performance, and low energy consumption.  A specific tool for a specific purpose.

Any size, any shape, all done within a couple of weeks. Pretty cool. How about the Miniwasher Liter with a Yoke Mount and Eyebrow mounted on a vertical surface for backlighting. Microborderlites spaced 1.5 inches across instead of 6" on-center. The Artisan with a cover, louver and blue lens, custom powdercoated to match an overhang. The Soffitliter Package which includes the LPC and a powdercoated plate to match the fixture, used to hide the wiring for a very neat and clean installation.  Any effect you need, we can accomplish, and we can accomplish it together.

In the end, know that we love the challenge you give us everyday. We challenge you to be remarkable. Design your projects to distinguish your business and know you have a partner that can accomplish it with you.

Contractor of the Week
Mark Barkman

While many areas throughout the United States are booming, Michigan is suffering its worst economic down-turn since 1982.  This is where a dedication to professional service through well trained employees has sustained Barkman Landscaping as a leader in the greater Genesee County area.

Mark Barkman began his design/build company 24 years ago with these same economic conditions.  Mark learned very quickly that if you are to succeed in a service business, you need dedicated and loyal clients who will refer your company to family, friends and co-workers, letting them know how pleased they are with your service.  Over 76% of their business each season comes from referrals and long-time customers.

Barkman Landscaping takes pride in the quality and creativity that goes into every clients project.  They provide service throughout southeast Michigan, and in the heart of their season employ around 30 specialized workers.

Their design team consists of members who are graduates of Michigan State University with degrees in Landscape Horticulture/Design and Landscape Architecture.  They also have 7 Michigan Certified Nurserymen on staff.

Mark said that landscape lighting has been an area of the business that has continuously grown each year.  "Our clients love the effect it adds to their landscape and home.  It offers a nice finishing touch that enables the client to add beauty and security during the evening hours."

Barkman Landscaping has been Michigan's NightscapingŪ Contractor of the Year for the past two years.

170° x 15°...Important Numbers When Designing With Light

In order to be successful in your designs, you'll want to understand the way the human eye perceives light. This knowledge is key in lighting design.
The normal human field of vision is approximately 170 degrees wide (horizontally) but only 15 degrees high (vertically). This means what people see are wide, thin bands. Thus our senses will be wowed by a wide, expansive lighting scheme, which we can take in all at once, while a tall, extremely high scheme--unless it is far in the distance, will be lost to most normal views.
This difference between the height and width of our normal field of vision is the reason why we see out of the "corners of our eyes." It's also the reason why it's a waste to light up a sixty-foot palm tree near someone's gate--no one will ever see it without staring intentionally up to the crown.
This rule, of course, breaks down if there's a wide open expanse beyond the gate, with little vegetation to obscure these trees. If the approach is open scrub land, for instance, the effect of a lit 60-foot palm in the distance can be quite striking. Normally, however, this is not the case. It's very important to consider the normal human field of vision from all the different viewing points of someone's grounds.
This is why it's crucial to discover where the guests of your clients will likely be congregating: from these points, you'll want the design to look its best. It's also good to remember that most people stare at a point about 15 feet in front of them as they walk--only the old and infirmed look at their feet. Young children have the tendency to try to look everywhere at once, which is why they so often end up on their rumps.

NightscapingŪ Paintline

The NightscapingŪ factory features a fully operational powdercoat paintline. This powdercoat finishing process allows us to back the powdercoated fixtures we manufacture with a guarantee of 10 years.

Once the fixtures and parts are painted, they are put through a rigorous curing process. This helps us guarantee the powdercoat finishes we provide will withstand any climate or environmental condition.

Powdercoat finish colors are available for you to choose from. However, if your color of choice is not one of our standard or premium options, we can provide you with the custom color or color combination of your choice.
